Drive-Thru Safari Wildlife Parks in Minnesota

Minnesota has no commercial drive-thru safari park. Its best roadside wildlife experiences are both public and nearly free: a drive through a fenced prairie with a wild bison herd near Mankato, and a refuge loop north of the Twin Cities where thousands of sandhill cranes gather each October.

  • Buy it at the park office near the falls, at the self-registration booth by the north entrance, or online.

  • Bison Drive: Thursday – Tuesday, closed Wednesdays for maintenance. It generally opens at 9 AM. Closing time shifts by season (from about 3:30 PM in the off-season to 7–8:30 PM in summer), so call or check the DNR page before you go.
  • The road may close temporarily when it’s wet.

Rules:

  • Stay inside your vehicle at all times in the bison range.
  • No hiking inside the range. A 4-mile perimeter trail has overlook views instead.

  • Bison are often right at the gate first thing in the morning and farther from the road in the evening.
  • Bring binoculars.
  • Combine the drive with Minneopa Falls, southern Minnesota’s largest waterfall, and the historic Seppmann Mill.
